The elevation-adjustable rear peep sight was swapped with a windage and elevation-adjustable square notched iron sight since the front post was non-adjustable. It uses the exact same internal parts and magazines. The grip is literally a part of the receiver so it cannot have a stock attached. The Charter Arms Explorer II uses an AR7 receiver with a fixed pistol grip more or less. Their results? The Charter Arms Explorer II pistol came out in 1980. During the late 1970s, the AR7 saw dips in sales and Charter Arms sought to quickly reinvigorate the Explorer design. Shortly after ArmaLite ceased production of the AR7, Charter Arms picked up the slack and would produce the handy survival rifle from 1973 until 1990. ArmaLite would produce the AR7 (marketed as the AR7 Explorer) from 1959 to 1973 but the design would be licensed and reproduced all the way up till now where Henry Repeating Arms currently makes one. It saw usage by distant militaries in small numbers and civilian sales were fair. Despite the common misconception that the AR7 was adopted or used by the military, it was fairly popular in the world at large. It was intended to duplicate the core fundamentals of the AR5 in that it was to be chambered in a small caliber, be light enough to tote around, float if dropped in water, and collapse/be disassembled into the stock. That is when the AR7 came onto the scene in 1959. With the successful adoption of the AR5 survival rifle chambered in 22 Hornet, ArmaLite decided a commercial survival rifle could be potentially more successful. But the cliff notes are that the Charter Arms Explorer II is a late iteration of the AR7 survival rifle.

I don’t see any reason that we can’t put together our own database of serial numbers with the features they include. Swirled stock models started with serial 70,000 Some stuff I ran across on the net (unverified) īrown stock models started with serial 50,000 I’m not sure if ArmaLite made the stocks in black before selling to Charter Arms in 1973. The second versions had swirled, multi colored stocks like mine. The earliest models had serial numbers that were covered up when the stock was installed.
The first models had brown stocks and butt pads. How cool would it be if this thing was made in my birth year, 1965. A little research reveals that only was true from 1962 to 1967. The closest I have been able to come is the parts list indicates that California residents have to pay 4% sales tax. I’m trying to find out when it was made and there is no database of serial numbers like others may have. I took a few pictures and I am reaching out to you, my readers to help me fill in the blanks. That’s exactly what led me to start this sight. Just like when I got my first AR-180, I find there is not much info to be had. Just picked this little ArmaLite AR-7 up yesterday and like everything I buy, I have to immediately learn everything about it.
